Steel Mill Boiler Design and Installation

The integrated steel mill uses Goggle valves to isolate downstream flow. These valves render an absolute tight shut off in blast furnace and basic oxygen furnace applications to assure the safety of personnel working downstream. The client wanted to exchange the existing frame but the original platform was not large enough to perform the replacement work. These specific valve frames are 22 by 10 feet and weigh approximately 22,000 pounds. The client requested ADF’s services to design a platform extension located 177 feet in the air so the goggle frame could be replaced.

Work Completed:

This project started in the conceptual phase and went through all phases including start-up and commissioning. Design and drafting work took two months to complete. During the project, ADF:

  • Designed an approximately 290-square-foot extension to an existing platform suspended 177 feet in the air.
  • Designed a fully adjustable and portable table so the 22-foot goggle frame could be rolled out of the valve body and picked up by a crane at the end of the platform.
  • Ran Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of the platform extension and original steel to evaluate how the structure will react to a moving 22,000-pound load.
  • Issued three structural CAD drawings showing the new platform steel and the rollout table.
